Very Specific Book Recs: Fantasy Books + Series with Unforgettable Talking Animals or Magical Creature Sidekicks

The bloodsworn saga by john gwynne, about favorite talking animals and creature sidekicks in series.

While reading the final two books in The Drowning Empire series this week, I realized one of my favorite specific book tropes is when there’s a talking magical creature or animal sidekick. So not just a pet–they must speak. Why this trope? Well, these animal allies and creature companions have held a special place in the hearts of readers for generations–I know I can’t be the only one who gets attached! Their presence adds whimsy, companionship, and often a touch of snarky wit to these fantastical stories we cherish. Perhaps my own fascination with talking animals can be traced back to Disney’s Cinderella, with her loyal and chatty mice, which I watched over and over and over again.

All this got me thinking about what other favorite books and series have this very specific ‘trope’. Of course, I had to make a rec list. Maybe these are some of your favorites as well, or some to add to your TBR if you’re a talking animal/creature lover like me. Have any favorite reads not on the list? Drop them in the comments!

The Shadow of the Gods and The Hunger of the Gods by John Gwynne

Creatures: Spert and Vesli

There are many ‘creatures’ in the Bloodsworn Saga, but Spert and Vesli are my absolute favorite quintessential creature companions of Orka.

The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart

Creatures: Mephi and Thrana

If I’m honest, the only reason I kept reading book two and three was for Mephi and Thrana. Mephi especially has the best personality. He cracks me up, and is always hungry, but also so protective of Jovis. Side note: book one is amazing and has the coolest magic system, but I was disappointed with the second and third installments.

The Gilded Ones by Namina Forna

Creature: Ixa

Ixa pretty much only says one word throughout the entire series, but it somehow steals your heart.

The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis

Creatures: my personal favorites are Reepicheep and Bree

The most noble of mouse(s) hmmm mice? You get it. Did I cry over a mouse? Yes. And Bree is one of my favorite snarky horses.

Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros

Creatures: Tairn and Andarna

When I tell you how obsessed I am with the dragons in this book?! I mean, you can check my full review here, but Tairn and Andarna must be protected at all costs. It’s grumpy sunshine, animal edition.

Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas

Creature: Abraxos

Anyone who’s read the Throne of Glass series can’t help but be obsessed with Abraxos, Manon’s wyvern. We’ve all collectively decided he’s exactly like Toothless from How to Train Your Dragon.

The Inheritance Cycle series by Christopher Paolini

Creature: Saphira

An ‘old school’ dragon series that’s having us feel nostalgic.

The Winternight Trilogy by Katherine Arden

Creature: Solovey

Is he a horse? Is he a swan? Who knows… but we love him endlessly.
