Book Review: The Viking Enemies-to-Lovers Read That Will Get You Out of a Reading Slump

I’ve had Sky in the Deep by Adrienne Young sitting on my TBR shelf for the past two years, and I can’t believe I’m just down getting to it. Y’all. RUN to get this book! It was SO good. After a string of mediocre reads, I’ve been feeling a little bit of a reading slump coming on, and this was exactly what I needed to get out of it.

Things to know:

- Viking setting with warring clans

- Badass FMC (Female Main Character)

- True enemies-to-lovers

- It’s Young Adult, so think simple story and tropes

You can literally read this in one sitting. I did. It’s short, and Young spares no words, but still provides a fully fleshed out story. Honestly, I would have loved it if it was a bit longer, but it was such an enjoyable read, so I’m just being wistful here. This story follows Eelyn, a young warrior who’s taken captive by the enemy clan in battle after seeing the brother she thought was dead fighting with them. Fiske is the enemy warrior holding her captive, and his family is everything. Loyalty, forgiveness, and love are at the heart of this story. Is it predictable? Sure. But in all the right ways.

”Ond eldr” — “Breathe Fire”

There’s a “Who did this to you?!” moment, which, if you know me, you know mortal danger moments are some of my favorites. I loved how, for such a short book, I became completely invested in these characters. It was like watching a super great Viking movie in my head. Lots of battles, flowing dialogue, and just an all around great YA read.

No spice, for those asking. It’s a solid young adult read with some fade to black, and I am here for it. I’ll be recommending this to everyone who wants a quick, immersive read, a slow-burn romance, and epic fight scenes.

Annnd now I’ll promptly be starting the next book, The Girl the Sea Gave Back, which is apparently 10 years or so after this one takes place, with some old and new characters. Can’t wait!
