7 Fantasy Standalone + Series Reads to Cure Your ‘Fourth Wing’ Reading Slump

What to read if you want to get out of a reading slump, fantasy edition. Especially if Fourth Wing put you into a reading slump.

You read Fourth Wing, and holy cliffhanger, it immediately put you in a reading slump. You’re counting down the days ‘til November 7th, and you’ve tried picking up a number of books, but none of them are giving you that can’t-put-down feeling. I’ve been there. Along with half of Booktok and Bookstagram. But I’ve got you–below are some recs, depending on what you’re looking for, that I think will be just the thing to get you out of your reading slump. Have a great rec? Drop it in the comments!

Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross

I’m fresh off reading this incredible five star, fantastical love story. I am honestly begging everyone to read this if you love lyrical writing, slow burn, low fantasy vibes. It is everything. There are magical typewriters, people! Plus, it’s free in Kindle Unlimited right now, so you literally have no excuses! My spoiler free review is here if that didn’t convince you.

The Bridge Kingdom + The Traitor Queen by Danielle L. Jensen

This duology was my obsession in 2021. I loved it so much and it got me out of a reading slump. It’s true enemies-to-lovers, and super fast paced with some well earned spice. If you want a badass FMC with non-stop action, read this! The spin off duology is also out, and has more spice for those looking for that.

Radiance + Eidolon by Grace Draven

This duology is friends to lovers, but hear me out! I know that trope gets a bad rap, but that’s because most authors don’t do it well. This is the exception. I loved this love story. If you’re looking for a Romantasy with an easy-to-understand world, and adorable characters, grab these!

The War of Lost Hearts Trilogy by Carissa Broadbent

If you’re a Romantasy fan and somehow haven’t picked this series up yet, do it! It’s a completed trilogy, and I found it to be very bingeable. If you loved the training part of Fourth Wing, and don’t mind it getting a bit dark, this might be the series for you. OH, and a grumpy sunshine trope. Here’s my Spoiler Free review for book one, book two, and book three

Sky in the Deep by Adrienne Young

I recommend this book anytime anyone asks me, “Do you have any recs for getting out of a reading slump?” THIS BOOK. It’s a Viking YA enemies-to-lovers story, and it has non-stop action, and an incredible FMC. It technically has a sequel with spinoff characters that I didn’t care for, but this one I will never stop recommending. Here’s my spoiler free review

Here with Me by Samantha Young

If you feel like you want to read a completely different genre after Fourth Wing to clear the palette, and you’re a Romance girl, pick this one up! Y’all know I am not a contemporary romance reader usually, but this book was great. Scottish highlands, a great plot, and some spice. Here’s my spoiler free review of book one and two. Yes, it’s a whole series that focuses on a different sibling each time. Unfortunately, I do have to say the series gets progressively worse IMO, but I LOVED book one, and still enjoyed book two. You can absolutely read book one as a standalone.

Skyhunter + Steelstriker by Marie Lu

Another YA fantasy I will never stop singing praises for and I wish more people knew about it. If you loved the disability rep in Fourth Wing, and the high stakes, you will love this completely duology. There is romance, but it’s YA, so don’t expect any spice.

If you want a piece of Basgiath War College to have with you always, check out our officially licensed Fourth Wing back-to-school collection over at Valor & Lore!
