17 Fantasy + Sci-Fi Bestsellers You Can Currently Find on Kindle Unlimited

I see people asking fairly often on Booktok and Bookstagram if they think Kindle Unlimited is worth it. And my answer is it really depends. If you’re an avid reader, and typically read more than a couple books a month, and you like Romance, Fantasy/Sci-fi, and Thrillers/Mysteries, it’s probably worth it. Those genres seem to be the most present (this is just a personal observation, and not based on data). And it’s absolutely a wonderful way to support indie authors and discover new authors. But lately, I’ve been shocked to also find super popular traditionally published novels on KU. If you’re on a book buying ban, or wanting to still read some of the most popular books you might have seen on Booktok and Bookstagram, I thought I’d put them all in a nice list for us. Below you’ll find some of my favorite fantasy and sci-fi reads, as well as SFF reads that are still on my TBR, but highly anticipated reads! Sometimes there are long waits at the library (on library apps like Libby and Boundless), so this is a great alternative. See any of from your TBR?

Circe by Madeline Miller

A beautiful retelling of an often misunderstood character.

Leviathan Wakes by James S. Corey

If you’ve ever heard of or watched The Expanse, this is the sci-fi book series that show is based on! I absolutely loved the show, so this has been super high on my TBR list.

The City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty

All of my friends who have read this have told me I will love it. I believe them. Non-western fantasy, romantic subplot, found family?! Sign me up.

Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross

You can read my full review here, but it’s become one of my favorite books of all time. Achingly beautiful and romantic.

A River Enchanted by Rebecca Ross

Rebecca’s entire backlist is on my TBR after reading her Letters of Enchantment duology (Divine Rivals + Ruthless Vows)

The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang

Everyone says they’re emotionally ruined after they read this series. Perfect.

Nettle & Bone by T. Kingfisher

I absolutely adored this book. Bone dog is everything!

Jade City by Fonda Lee

I have several mutuals on Booktok who are constantly talking about how great this series is. May this is the year I pick it up!

The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

Ok, this one’s technically not fantasy or sci-fi, but it WAS super popular on Booktok for a while, so I had to sneak it on the list. I really enjoyed this one (the subsequent novels in the series weren’t my favorite though).

Empire of the Vampire by Jay Kristoff

Since book two was just released, it’s perfect timing to snag this on Kindle Unlimited while you’re waiting for your library hold to come through for the second installment.

Vicious by V.E. Schwab

I will read anything by V.E. Schwab. This one is high on the TBR.

A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab

This was the first book I ever read by V.E. Schwab, and I was hooked. Plus, a portal fantasy? Always a yes.

American Gods by Neil Gaiman

One of the most unique novels surrounding Norse mythologies, and the battle between old and new gods.

The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien

At this point you know how much I love Tolkien and LOTR. This is your chance, if you’ve never read any Tolkien! I have a LOTR reading guide here.

Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan

I’m not going to lie, the Fairyloot special edition copy of this book is my Roman Empire, but reading for free on KU is a good consolation prize.

The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin

Yet another incredibly popular series from Booktok and I was shocked to see it available on KU! Grab it while you can.

Murderbot by Martha Wells

If you want a sci-fi series you can absolutely devour, with the best snarky humor, this is the one for you (check my full review here).

As always, Kindle Unlimited availability varies for traditionally published books. At the time of publishing this article, all of the above books were available. Hope you were able to snag them! Happy Reading. Are there any other big titles on KU from traditionally published series I missed? Pop them in the comments.

P.S. If you end up getting any hardcopies of books through an Amazon affiliate link above, you’ll be helping me support this site and newsletter. Thanks in advance for supporting a fellow bookworm! BTW, I will always disclose affiliate links when they’re present. :) Happy reading!
